The changing meaning of the word "friend"

Here's a post from my old blog that was focused on spiritual themes.

I advocate the use of technology for the betterment of mankind, the spreading of knowledge, and the development of the world. Along with the blessings of the digital age come the much discussed consequences of living in a cyber world. I wrote this poem to reflect my current observations and conclusions about the role of social media in our society. We live in a world where finding the balance grows increasingly difficult, and attempts to do so often result in situations like this.

Facebook, texting, Twitter, and phone
I relied on your service and now I'm alone.
Old friends are near, new friends abound,
But dearths of real friends is all I have found.
Surrounded by people whose smiles seem real,
Yet talking to neighbors has lost its appeal.
I'm surrounded by people on every side.
I want to add them to tickle my pride.
The more I have followers the more the glory.
The more people will know my meaningless story.
What's worse--this chatter impedes with perfection
The voice of God that would give me direction
And bid me serve those I see every day,
But the glow of the screen holds o'rpowering sway.
In an ocean of people, but, oh, so alone.
Facebook, texting, Twitter, and phone.
