More than self...America

There is nothing as exhilarating, refreshing, and inspiring as driving across America. Well do the words of "America the Beautiful" describe the natural wonders found here.

O beautiful for spacious skies

For amber waves of grain

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain

The beauty of the United States of America extends well beyond its physical features. I love America because of the freedoms I enjoy as a citizen of this country. I love the freedom of expression. I love that people can assemble and openly express their opinions, whatever they may be. I love the fact that people can protest and disagree with the government without fearing for their lives. I love the interstate system! I love the diversity of this country. I love that the fate of this nation ultimately lies in the hands of the people. I love public discourse. I love the cities. I love the suburbs and the neighborhoods.

America has flaws. America has problems. And that's okay. America is ever changing. I join my voice with that of the poet in pleading with the nation as a whole:

America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

May each of us work hard to preserve our nation by putting our country and our community before ourselves. Remember that this country is founded and maintained by heroes "who more than self their country loved/and mercy more than life!"

Selflessness will be the salvation of this nation--selfishness its downfall. And we, the individual citizens, decide by our own attitudes which course America will pursue.

What do you love about America?
